Newly appointed Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, will introduce a new rule on Monday, giving the school more flexibility in meeting nutrition standards for school lunches. Boy, I bet Michelle Obama is furious right now.
The Hill reported that The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) stated that Secretary Sonny Perdue and Sen. Pat Roberts are announcing this rule at the Catoctin Elementary School in Leesburg, Va. There they plan on having lunch with the students and discuss with them.
As you know, the Republicans have been trying a long time to reduce the nutrition standards set by Michelle Obama. She made the nutrition standards high in order to battle the obesity in America.
Sen. Pat Roberts introduced the legislation with Sen. Debbie Stabenow last year to give schools two more years to meet new reductions on sodium. However, the bill never passed.
The American Hearth Association immediately criticized this move. The CEO, Nancy Brown, said the current standards are already working and that 99 percent of schools are in compliance.
“Improving children’s health should be a top priority for the USDA, and serving more nutritious foods in schools is a clear-cut way to accomplish this goal,” she said.
She also added, “Rather than altering the current path forward, we hope the agency focuses more on providing technical assistance that can help schools get across the finish line, if they haven’t done so already.”
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think that Secretary Sonny Perdue should approve this?
