2017 will mark a full 16 years since the devastating attacks of September 11, 2001.
While, as of late, it’s become popular to view the events of that day through a more abstract lens, a new set of never-before-seen photos released by the FBI is serving as a stark reminder of the emotions many felt all those years ago.
As ABC News notes, the images center on the “horrific aftermath” of the September 11 attack on the Pentagon, which took the lives of 184 people:
Many of the images reveal the destruction that was visited upon the building when American Airlines Flight 77 — under the control of Al-Qaeda hijackers — crashed into the west end of the military headquarters, killing all 64 people aboard:
In the end, despite the clear destruction of that terrible day, the photos nonetheless serve as a reminder of something else.
